When in pain

What to do when in pain?

Follow the following steps whenever your pain resurfaces.

  1. IDENTIFY : Identify which of your daily activities is producing your pain. It’s important to isolate when do you register the pain. Is it while performing an activity or immediately after completing it or a few hours after, or at rest.
  2. MODIFY : Modify your posture of performing that activity or resting position. Modify various factors, your body alignment or the surfaces on which you are performing the activity or resting. Find which modifications reduce if not eliminate pain.
  3. EFFECT OF CORRECTIVE EXERCISE : Post physical evaluation by your physiotherapist, the physio would have prescribed a corrective exercise to be done when the pain arises. He/she would have kept you self reliant. The corrective exercise prescribed would be highly specific to your condition, without any dependency on any external paraphernalia. Perform that functional exercise, when In pain, whenever it arises. You are supposed to do the corrective movement when in pain, and not rest, unless advised otherwise by your physiotherapist.
  4. AVOID : If the corrective exercise as specifically prescribed, fails to have an effect, make note of your trigger parameters, and inform your physio. Avoid that particular activity/posture until then. Make notes of your pain patterns and inform the physiotherapist.

Communication is the key for a good recovery, so even if your pain increases, communicate with your physio and they shall reassess you and change the prescribed movement as required.

You and your physio have to work as a team to achieve the best result. Your results are after all his/hers. We will work at it together.
